Ashley Young on Conte's Intense Training Methods and Player Management
Ashley Young, who played under Antonio Conte at Inter Milan, has spoken about the Italian manager's demanding methods in a podcast. He recalled how after a loss, the team would meticulously review the entire match. "Every couple of minutes he would stop the video and ask, 'Why did you do that? Why did you do that?'" Young explained. These team meetings could last for three and a half hours, which Young admitted was challenging for players' concentration spans. He observed, "As players, our concentration span is probably about ten minutes. After that, you start to lose people's attention." He even mentioned that some players would fall asleep during these lengthy sessions.
Young suggested that this prolonged intensity could lead to injuries and immense pressure on the staff, who also had limited family time. He believes this is a key reason why Conte typically doesn't stay at a club for more than a couple of years. He also touched upon how experienced players who challenged Conte found themselves on their way out soon after. Despite the difficulties, Young credited Conte's rigorous training regime for contributing to his own longevity in the sport, allowing him to play until the age of 40.
