Edoardo Bove Shares Emotional Details of Cardiac Arrest, Recovery, and Mourinho's Special Gesture

Footballer Edoardo Bove has disclosed that José Mourinho made a concerted effort to contact his parents after Bove's severe cardiac arrest in 2024. Bove also reflected on the profound shift from feeling invincible on the field to being informed he might never play again.

Bove's recovery to full health has been remarkable, especially considering he suffered a life-threatening cardiac arrest on the field during a Serie A match between Inter and Fiorentina on December 1, 2024.

Then on loan at Fiorentina from Roma, Bove collapsed during the game, was immediately hospitalized, placed in intensive care, and subsequently received an internal, removable defibrillator.

While this implanted defibrillator prohibits Bove from playing professional football in Italy, he has successfully resumed his career in the United Kingdom, where regulations regarding heart conditions and medical devices are less restrictive. This echoes the situation of Christian Eriksen, who moved to the Premier League (Brentford, then Manchester United) after his cardiac arrest at EURO 2020, as Italian rules prevented his continued play for Inter.

Bove's path led him to Watford, where he has since made eight league appearances, signifying his return to active football.

In a recent interview, Bove openly discussed the challenging eighteen months he has endured.

"The last thing I recall is collapsing," Bove recounted. "I regained consciousness in the hospital, completely unaware of what had occurred, initially believing I had been involved in a car accident."

He added, "Before the incident, I felt invincible, like a superhero. Then, I was told I might never play football again. There were moments of profound uncertainty, thinking, 'What will I do now?' and many incredibly difficult days where everything seemed to go wrong."

"Despite the hardship, it became an integral part of my journey," he stated. "I'm content with how things unfolded, and I've gained more wisdom this past year than from any prior experience."

During the interview, Bove demonstrated the visual appearance of the implanted defibrillator by lifting his shirt.

He explained, "For the first month, sleeping on your side is a challenge. It alters your physical appearance. Witnessing these changes in the mirror can be distressing for some, but I never felt disappointed by it."

"I consider myself fortunate that this occurred at an ideal age—22," Bove remarked. "I was mature enough to grasp its true significance, yet still possessed the youthful energy and resilience to overcome it."

Bove further disclosed that his former Roma coach, José Mourinho, made extraordinary efforts to reach out to him while he was hospitalized and unable to use his own phone for communication.

"He genuinely cares for every player he has coached," Bove observed, "though perhaps more so for some than others!"

"Mourinho initially messaged me, but since I couldn't reply to anyone, he obtained my parents' contact information," Bove explained. "I share an incredible bond with him; he is an immensely important figure for both me and my family."

"Reflecting on the past often makes me emotional, but simultaneously fills me with pride," he shared. "It was a prolonged struggle, but I managed to transform a difficult period into a valuable opportunity."

"I now view life with a different perspective," Bove concluded. "One loses out on life's richness without an open mind. I am happy."
