Fabio Capello Analyzes Italy's Performance Ahead of Crucial World Cup Play-off Final

Veteran coach Fabio Capello, who previously managed top clubs like Milan, Roma, and Juventus, observed what he termed the 'typical patterns' of Italian football during the Azzurri's 2-0 victory against Northern Ireland. However, he specifically praised the team's 'response' and the impactful play of Francesco Pio Esposito.

The Italian national team, the Azzurri, traveled to Zenica today, setting the stage for their decisive World Cup play-off Final against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Following a training session at Coverciano on Monday morning, the squad embarked on a private flight to Bosnia. A pre-match press conference is scheduled for later today, featuring coach Gennaro Gattuso and captain Gigio Donnarumma.

Regarding the drawbacks, Capello stated, "To begin with the negatives, I would point to the recurring issues often observed in Italian football: excessive sideways passing, a general slowness, insufficient vertical attacking play, and a noticeable lack of assertive presence when holding possession."

Turning to the positives, he added, "The team's reaction was crucial. I was also impressed by the inclusion of Pio Esposito, whose presence introduced a valuable sense of balance. While all three attacking choices are competent, Retegui and Kean exhibit somewhat similar profiles. Pio, however, particularly in critical phases, possesses a strength and aerial prowess that could prove vital, complemented by his excellent spatial awareness."

Capello Raises Defensive Concerns Ahead of Bosnia Clash

While the Azzurri anticipate a challenging atmosphere, Capello's primary concern lies with the tactical aspects of the game. He articulated his worry, stating, "My apprehension revolves around set-pieces – specifically corner kicks and free kicks – and how effectively we will defend within our own penalty area. Our defenders are highly skilled with the ball at their feet, but they are less adept at close-range marking. Bosnia heavily leverages these situations; just last Thursday, Dzeko demonstrated his aerial dominance against strong Welsh defenders. We are up against a national team boasting quality and resolve, exemplified by their 18-year-old penalty taker, Alajbegovic."
