Five Top Horse Racing Tips for Saturday: Newbury, Kelso & Lingfield Selections
Alan Thomson, the former Racing Editor for the Daily Record, provides his top five horse racing selections for Saturday's fixtures at Newbury, Kelso, and Lingfield. His detailed insights for potential winners are outlined below.
Newbury Selections
TWINJETS (3.45 Newbury)
Paul Nicholls-trained Twinjets appears well-placed to defy the top weight in the BetVictor Greatwood Gold Cup at Newbury. This 2m 4f handicap chase features an 11-runner field. The gelding seeks to make amends after an unusual jumping error at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day, where he unseated his rider at the seventh fence. Previously, Twinjets secured a notable course and distance victory in late February, having also outclassed Etalon and Heltenham at Fontwell.
Market rival Vincenzo, despite his exceptional consistency with seven consecutive finishes in the top two, required significant urging to secure his win at Ascot last month, making a 2lb rise seem fair. Triple Trade, who placed third at Cheltenham, and Issam, impressive with a clear win at Ascot 26 days ago (despite a 7lb rise), also present strong credentials.
BRENTFORD HOPE (2.10 Newbury)
Rainfall would pose no inconvenience for Brentford Hope in the 2m 4f BetVictor Handicap Hurdle, offering another prime winning chance for jockey Megan Fox. Fox delivered a superb ride when Brentford Hope triumphed at Haydock, and the horse later exceeded expectations, finishing strongly behind The New Lion and Nemean Lion in January's Grade 2 Unibet Hurdle at Cheltenham at 50-1 odds. This selection competes off the same handicap mark in a less demanding contest. Taunton victor Brave Knight and Doctor Blue are identified as the main contenders.
LUCKY BERE (4.23 Newbury)
Lucky Bere is anticipated to offer excellent each-way value in the competitive 2m 4f handicap hurdle. Kate Woollacott’s gelding displayed prominent early pace, narrowly missing out on victory by a head to Kel du Large at Hereford (on heavy ground) 17 days ago, following an earlier win at Wincanton. First-time cheek-pieces are applied, and Joshua Newman's valuable 5lb claim adds to his appeal. While Harry Coben has ridden Lucky Bere previously, he is booked to ride Just A Rose for the Nicholls stable.
Kelso Selection
HOT FUSS (2.55 Kelso)
The main event at Kelso, the 17-runner bet365 Morebattle Handicap Hurdle, sees last year’s champion Cracking Rhapsody return with a 4lb higher handicap mark. While the defending champion certainly has a good chance, a slight preference is given to Hot Fuss, who looks like a promising bet at a good price. Tom Dascombe’s five-year-old secured a significant prize at Windsor last month and consistently performs well in large fields, notably achieving an impressive fourth place out of 22 runners in last March’s Fred Winter Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham.
Sean Bowen will be aboard Hamlet’s Night, a gelding who has taken an unconventional route to this race, having won on Kempton’s all-weather track ten days ago following a lengthy break. Wise Eagle, who posted a solid third-place finish at Musselburgh four weeks prior, is also expected to be competitive. Dan Skelton’s Quaviste carries a light weight and could be a dark horse. Many bookmakers are currently offering favourable each-way terms for this race.
Lingfield Selection
TEN CARAT HARRY (2.35 Lingfield)
The BetMGM-sponsored Lingfield Spring Cup on the Polytrack features Ten Carat Harry, who has been a revelation this winter with six victories from seven starts. Jamie Osborne has secured Tom Marquand for the ride, and they will likely need a touch of luck from stall one. The step up to seven furlongs is not expected to present any significant issues. Top-rated Sir Albert, who placed in last season’s Flying Scotsman Stakes at Doncaster, represents the highly successful Andrew Balding yard. Richie’s Rocket, a nine-length winner over course and distance for Ralph Beckett in November, also shows considerable promise.
