Hassane Kamara Explains Controversial Gesture as Udinese Condemns Racist Abuse
Udinese defender Hassane Kamara has clarified his contentious reaction during his team's 2-0 victory over Genoa, an incident that was regrettably followed by racist abuse targeting him and teammate Keinan Davis. Udinese Calcio has since issued a strong condemnation of the hateful messages received by their players.
The match, held at Marassi on Friday evening, saw Jurgen Ekkelenkamp and Davis score, but escalated into a heated affair in its closing moments. In the 84th minute, as Kamara was substituted, he made faces and stuck out his tongue towards the Genoa fans. This provoked an angry response from Genoa striker Lorenzo Colombo, who subsequently received a booking.
What Sparked Kamara's Controversy
Kamara addressed the incident on Instagram, explaining his actions: "A quick clarification: if on Friday I left the field sticking my tongue out at the Genoa fans, it was solely because I had been subjected to insults and middle fingers. It was my way, playful and non-violent, of responding. In 12 years of my career, I have never provoked anyone, and I won't start now. Colombo's anger is understandable. I'm grateful to his coach, his teammates, and my own, for de-escalating the situation. Football is a sport that unites people, and it must remain so. P.S. To those using this opportunity to send racist insults via social media: the internet remembers, and this will not go unpunished."
Following this, Kamara shared a compilation of the racist insults he received on his Instagram Stories, revealing the usernames of those responsible. Teammate Keinan Davis reposted this message, leading Udinese Calcio to release an official statement.
"Udinese Calcio strongly condemns the deplorable behavior directed at players Keinan Davis and Hassane Kamara, who were subjected to racist insults on their social media profiles," the club stated. "Such shameful incidents defy all principles of a civilized society; they are unacceptable, and Udinese will always strive to combat them."
It is a bitter irony that these events unfolded during the very week of Lega Serie A's 'Keep Racism Out' media campaign, underscoring the persistent challenge of racism in football.
