Jeff Bezos Joins Liverpool FC Ownership
Following recent speculation, it has been officially confirmed that Liverpool Football Club has welcomed a new group of investors, which includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the current owner of the English club, has finalized an agreement to sell a strategic minority stake, approximately 30% of the club's equity, to the consortium 1892 Holdings. Jeff Bezos is among the shareholders of this consortium.
This transaction values Liverpool at approximately £5.5 billion (over six billion euros) and involves an investment exceeding two billion euros. The consortium is led by Anglo-Indian entrepreneur Amit Bhatia and, in addition to Bezos, includes Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin and the family trusts of the Mittal family.
Bezos is participating through K5 Sports, where he is the principal investor, but he will not be joining the Liverpool board of directors. Amit Bhatia, who previously served as a director and co-owner of Queens Park Rangers, will assume the role of vice-chairman of Liverpool and will be part of the expanded board. Bryan Baum of K5 Sports and Elaine Saverin will also join the board.
The deal is pending the necessary regulatory approvals. FSG will retain the majority of shares and operational control of Liverpool. FSG, which acquired the club in 2010 for around £300 million, has described the agreement as a strategic partnership designed to support the international growth and long-term objectives of the Reds.
The ownership group emphasizes that the introduction of these new investors will not lead to immediate changes in sporting management or a new transfer budget. This agreement marks Jeff Bezos's first significant involvement in the world of football.
