Rudi Garcia: Understanding Lukaku and Hoping for 'More Playing Time' at Napoli
Belgium coach Rudi Garcia has expressed his support for Romelu Lukaku, acknowledging the striker's need to follow a 'specific program' to regain peak physical condition. Garcia also conveyed his hope that the 30-year-old forward will secure increased playing opportunities upon his return to Napoli.
Garcia, a former tactician for Napoli himself, appeared to defend Lukaku's actions despite the striker's decision to train individually in Belgium during the recent break, rather than rejoining the Naples squad as anticipated.
Belgium Coach Supports Lukaku After Napoli Dispute
Lukaku reportedly violated Napoli's internal regulations and is expected to face a fine from the club. Furthermore, various reports indicate that Napoli might sideline him from the team if he does not report back by next Tuesday.
During the March international break, Lukaku initially joined the Belgian national team but was subsequently omitted from the squad due to his suboptimal form.
"Lukaku wasn't at 100% fitness; he needed to follow a tailored recovery program," Garcia stated during a press conference on Saturday.
"It's completely normal for him to aspire to perform at his best. When that's not possible, the mental aspect becomes crucial, often due to the fear of re-injury. We understand his situation. Francesco Totti experienced a similar injury, and we know that recovery from such issues takes time."
Lukaku suffered a significant muscle injury during the pre-season, which has limited him to playing just over 60 minutes across all competitions this season, scoring one goal in seven appearances.
Garcia further expressed, "I hope Lukaku can quickly rejoin Napoli and gain more playing time there."
"It is vital for both the club and for us that he achieves full fitness as quickly as possible. We must ensure everyone understands that Romelu needs to do what he believes is necessary to reach his optimal physical and mental condition."
Garcia, a past coach for Napoli, is reportedly not on favorable terms with the club's President, Aurelio De Laurentiis. Last year, Garcia famously commented that he had enjoyed "everything" about his tenure at the club, with the sole exception of its owner.
