Bayern Munich delivered a dominant performance, overwhelming Atalanta with a 6-1 victory in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 clash in Bergamo. The goals for Bayern came from Josip Stanisic, Michael Olise (twice), Serge Gnabry, Nicolas Jackson, and Jamal Musiala, while Mario Pasalic scored a late consolation for Atalanta.

Atalanta's journey to this stage involved a dramatic playoff victory over fellow German club Borussia Dortmund. In contrast, Bayern Munich secured their spot directly by finishing second in the league phase, ensuring automatic qualification for the knockout stages.

Raffaele Palladino's tactical choices for Atalanta, including a switch to a back four and starting Gianluca Scamacca alongside Nikola Krstovic up front, raised some eyebrows. The team was already hampered by injuries to Ederson, Charles De Ketelaere, and Giacomo Raspadori, and Giorgio Scalvini was suspended. Bayern, despite resting key players like Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala from the start, still boasted a formidable attacking line-up featuring Olise, Gnabry, Luis Diaz, and Jackson.

The match in Bergamo began with high intensity. Although Atalanta managed to win possession twice in Bayern's half early on, it was Olise who produced the game's first shot on target for the visitors.

Bayern maintained their early pressure, breaking the deadlock in the 12th minute with a clever corner kick routine. A momentary lapse in concentration from Atalanta allowed Olise to play a short corner to Gnabry, who then set up Stanisic for a simple tap-in.

Just ten minutes later, the German giants extended their lead courtesy of a superb individual effort from Olise. Drifting in from the right wing, the French winger skillfully controlled the ball before unleashing a magnificent curling shot with his left foot, finding the far corner of the net.

Atalanta's woes compounded rapidly as Gnabry scored Bayern's third goal less than five minutes later. Following a long clearance from Urbig, Olise expertly brought the ball down and supplied Gnabry. The forward then surged into the box and clinically finished past Carnesecchi in a one-on-one situation.

Despite holding a commanding three-goal lead away from home before the end of the first half, Bayern showed no signs of complacency, consistently threatening Atalanta's goal. Before halftime, Bayern had several more opportunities to score: Jackson missed a one-on-one chance against Carnesecchi, Gnabry struck the crossbar, and Dayot Upamecano, surprisingly unmarked, fired a shot wide from midfield.

Bayern resumed their relentless assault in the second half. In the 52nd minute, after Nicola Zalewski's free-kick hit the Bayern wall, Kompany's team launched a swift counter-attack, culminating in Jackson converting a one-on-one opportunity.

Olise secured his brace with another exquisite left-footed strike. Mimicking his first goal, he once more cut in from the right flank to curl the ball precisely into the far corner from the edge of the box.

Bayern reached a six-goal tally with their subsequent attack. Jackson, operating on the right wing, skillfully beat his marker and delivered a cross into the six-yard box, allowing Musiala to tap the ball in.

Bayern had further chances to extend their lead before the final whistle, with Upamecano's header hitting the post being the closest attempt.

In injury time, Mario Pasalic offered Atalanta fans a small moment of joy with a late consolation goal. Raoul Bellanova's effective run down the right flank and a well-placed cross led to a collision between Krstovic and Urbig, but the loose ball conveniently fell to the Croatian, who duly slotted it into the net.

Atalanta is set to face Bayern in Bavaria for the second leg next weekend, but following Tuesday's heavy defeat, the return fixture appears to be little more than a grim formality for La Dea.
